Warehouse Management System (WMS) is a system that using warehousing, outbound and dispatch functions to realize batch management, material correspondence, inventory, quality inspection, virtual warehouse management and real-time inventory management. It can effectively control and track the whole process and realize warehouse information management. The system can be implemented independently or combined with other systems to provide more complete and comprehensive enterprise information.
Warehouse management module of ERP system usually is connected with financial system and used to calculate material cost and inventory of enterprises. Its main function is to assist procurement information and to collect and calculate afterwards cost.
For most company who interested in ASRS solution, they already have their own ERP system. In their ERP system there’s warehouse management module, which looks similar like Warehouse Management System (WMS), but there are many different functions and emphasis. Before deciding if the WMS is right for you, have you really understand those difference?
Checkout HRD WMS vs ERP warehouse management module here:
1. Different ways of management
ERP warehouse management emphasizes results management, while WMS emphasizes process management.
ERP warehouse management is oriented to financial accounting, while WMS is oriented to process control.
2. Different levels of accuracy
Although ERP warehouse management divides warehouse into different zones and locations, it is easy to misplace because there is no process checking function, which leads to the disorder of inventory management. WMS uses bar code technology to identify each pallet location, and scans it for each inbound and outbound, so it can achieve accurate inventory management.
ERP warehousing management can generally achieve batch management of materials, there is no way to uniquely identify the difference. WMS can include batch management and uniqueness management, uniqueness coding for some valuables or key materials to increase the accuracy of material management.
3. Different efficiency
Some ERP manufacturers have integrated the barcode management function, but the function is more defective. They can not parse and apply the barcode of other manufacturers’, and have not integrated with the barcode hardware and detection hardware. As a result, they can not be applied in practice eventually. The operation of warehousing, inventory and inspection still needs manual input, which is inefficient.
WMS solves the above problems by scanning the warehouse inbound, outbound and inventory to increase work efficiency and accuracy. The integration with testing equipment not only reduces the workload of warehouse personnel, but also increases the integrity of material quality trace-ability, which facilitates the refined assessment of suppliers.
ERP warehouse management is suitable for enterprises with few batches of varieties, low efficiency of inbound and outbound, low requirement of quality guarantee period and trace-ability, while WMS is suitable for warehouses with more batches of varieties, high efficiency of inbound and outbound, and high requirement of quality guarantee period and trace-ability.
There is no integrated application of hardware in ERP warehouse management. WMS integrates with bar code equipment, conveying equipment, forklift terminal and testing equipment to realize the automated application of warehouse operation management.
6. Different extensibility
ERP warehouse management belongs to a molded software module, which basically does not support customized development and can not fully meet enterprise’s needs. WMS is highly flexible and belongs to the secondary development of basic software framework, which is tailor-made solution.
