Objectives of Operation & Maintenance Management of Automation Equipment

Equipment management is just like the self-care. We need to reduce the incidence of disease through continuous self-care. In order to keep the equipment from getting sick, it is necessary to maintain the equipment well and reduce the frequency of sudden abnormalities of the equipment through reasonable maintenance.


In daily work, people will distinguish things according to two dimensions: importance and urgency.


Attention should be paid to the work of the second quadrant so as to reduce the probability of the first quadrant events. The idea of equipment management has changed from equipment maintenance to ensuring the stability of equipment. Its purpose is to reach the limit of the comprehensive efficiency of equipment.


Two Indicators of Equipment Management Evaluation

MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures)

MTBF is used to measure the time interval between this fault and the last one. The MTBF example is shown below.


From the perspective of equipment management, MTBF represents the reliability of equipment. The larger of the value, the less number of failures and the lower of cost. Equipment management can realize life prediction of key components of equipment through MTBF, make maintenance plan, re-check spare parts safety inventory, etc. (fig. 2).


MTTR (Mean Time To Repair)

MTTR is the average time from failure to repair. It is used to measure whether a system is easy to maintain. The smaller the MTTR value is, the shorter the repair time is, the easier the system is to maintain and the higher the maintenance degree is. An example of MTTR is shown in Fig. 3.

Equipment management can use MTTR to measure whether the equipment is easy to maintain, as a reference condition for selection, and to measure the skill level of equipment staff, targeted training.
